History of Cross of Christ

A Brief History of Cross of Christ…
Evidence that our God is a Gracious God!

March 1983 – Pastor Mark Cares of Messiah in Nampa tries weekly worship services in Boise.  They continue until April of 1986 under the name “Resurrection Lutheran Church.”  They are held in three different locations. The effort fails due to a lack of manpower (such as a full-time called worker).

September 1993 – The Wisconsin Synod grants funds and permission for exploratory status and the Pacific Northwest District Mission Board extends Divine Calls to two different pastors to be exploratory missionaries in West Boise – both return their Calls.

January - May 1994 – The PNW Distr. Mission Bd. extends a Call to Pastor John Steinbrenner who was serving a congregation on the south side of the Twin Cities in Minnesota – he accepts the Call and he moves to Boise, with his wife Carrie and three children.

Summer 1994 – Initial mission work begins – including naming the church, defining the target area for outreach, canvassing hundreds of homes, mailing out thousands of tracts, visiting many people and sharing law and gospel with them. The first Bible Information Class begins in early July.

January 1995 – With a core of 32 members committed to the mission effort, monthly meetings are held in the new parsonage basement to discuss renting a local school to begin worship services.

March 26, 1995 – Cross of Christ holds its first worship service at Ustick Elementary School Gym in West Boise - 53 people attend the opening service.

April 1996 – The PNW Mission Board grants Cross of Christ “mission status” and “land search authority.”

July 1996 – Cross of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church files articles of incorporation with the state of Idaho. The July 7th edition of the “Idaho Statesman” lists President Richard Guthmiller and Roy Lange as initial directors. The Synod sells the parsonage to Cross of Christ and they become the official owner of the N. Buckboard Pl. property.

Fall 1996 – Land search begins to build a permanent church home. A golden five acre plot on W. McMillan “suddenly” becomes available in February 1997. Once again God’s hand of blessing is clearly recognized. Attendance and membership continue to grow.

October 1997 - At the October Planning & Zoning meeting held at the Boise City Hall, the Commission passed Cross of Christ’s proposal to use the land at 11655 W. McMillan Rd. to build a church, with long-range plans to build an education building and gymnasium.

December 1997 – Cross of Christ officially purchases the land and its little farmhouse at 11655 W. McMillan Rd. Over the next several months, the farmhouse is sold and moved.

December 1998 – January 2000 – Church floor plans are studied, gifts are given and new chapel is under construction by June 2000.

December 2000 – Cross of Christ holds their first worship service in their new church. Three weeks later 191 people attend church to hear the children sing their praises to the Newborn King.

God continues to bless and grow the congregation at Cross of Christ as he has for a decade and a half. The Bible’s teachings are their guide for faith and life. Jesus’ blood and righteousness are their salvation… and this incredible love is their motivation to live for him as they share his message of forgiveness with all. Please stop by and visit… you’ll be glad you did!
